I called up Lenovo and asked them about this machine's bad habit of waking up from sleep mode and running its own battery down while you're not aware. It is a chronic problem that is frequently mentioned in thorough reviews for this model.
Every person I was transferred to played stupid and acted like this problem doesn't exist. I was finally transferred to a tech support person who was willing to acknowledge that this model does indeed have a problem with coming out of sleep mode all on its own, causing it to heat up and drain its battery.
Tech support also confirmed that there is no fix for this problem, and that the workaround/remedy is to not use sleep mode but to use hibernation instead. Hibernation, for those who may not know, is a Windows feature that saves everything in memory to disk before doing a full shutdown and reads it all back into memory when starting back up. Think of it as sleep mode being transferred to the hard drive. It takes longer to hibernate and wake back up because of all the disk reading and writing, but it's actually a cool function and a good alternative. It's also still a lot faster than normal shutdown and rebooting, and still allows you to keep all programs open just like sleep mode. The biggest plus is that your battery doesn't slowly drain while hibernating like it does when it's sleeping. For what it's worth, hibernation works extremely well in Windows XP, I have used it extensively before. Same with Vista.
But regardless, the Lenovo S10-2 does come from the factory with the manufacturer's defect of waking back up from sleep mode on its own, causing it to heat up and drain its battery.
It is possible that what is waking the S10-2 up is the camera. I read a review that said that when the author disabled/uninstalled the webcam software, it improved the situation, but did not entirely solve it. If you go into the BIOS and completely disable the webcam, it might solve this problem entirely. I will try it on mine when it arrives (I bought one anyway).
So anyway, there it is directly from Lenovo themselves - they have very relucantly acknowledged to me over the phone that this is a problem with this laptop, and there is no fix - just the hibernation workaround, which for most, should be an acceptable workaround in most cases (but still a bandaid to a flawed product). I was also directly told that no fix is planned. I would assume that if they release a 10S-3, ti will not bave this problem. The S12 model, however, does not have this "insomnia/wake for no reason" problem when sleep mode is used. Only the S10-2 has this problem. It's too bad, because the S12 battery life is only half that of the 10S-2.
Would have been 5 stars if product had no defects.
Would have been 4 stars if Lenovo acknowledged problem/had fix.
3 stars because this otherwise great model has a well-known defect and Lenovo indeed knows about but won't acknowledge until you rub their noses in it.
